Does the idea of having to pick a bottle of wine fill you with dread? A little knowledge can help you understand the subtle differences between a variety of wines. You should educate yourself a bit more on wine in order to enjoy it more. The piece that follows can help.

Do not buy large quantities of a wine you like. Your preferences will change quickly as you discover new wines and you might regret spending your money on a wine you will eventually come to consider as average. Purchase small quantities and keep trying new wines to expand your horizons.

The best way to enjoy wine is responsibly. Know your limits and ensure that you don't overdo it, especially when with guests. While some wine with lunch or dinner is always in good taste, becoming sloppy afterwards due to drunkenness is not. Enjoyed in moderation, wine will be your friend for life.

Wine should be stored in a dark, cool location. One of the best places to help your wine remain fresh if you do not have a wine cellar is in a closet in your basement. Store your bottles on their side away from any light sources to help it remain fresh.

Enjoy wine tasting events. This will allow you to find wines that you may love. This can even become a social event. Ask others to come along for the ride. You can build your social ties and well as enjoy the atmosphere and cheer that a wine tasting offers.

Consider purchasing a wine from a lesser-known region of the world. While everyone gravitates toward wines from France or California, there are great varieties to be found most everywhere! You might find a lovely red wine in North Carolina or a never heard winery in Australia. Give a few a try, and enjoy the variety, they bring to your table.

Keep a wine journal. Write down the names of wines that you taste and what you think of them. Over time, this will develop into a great resource for you. It is also nice to look back and see where you came from and what direction you are headed in when it comes to your wine preferences.

To make the most of each glass of wine, make sure you serve it up at its optimum temperature. Red wine needs to be about 60 degrees. Keep your red wine around 58° so that it can warm to the perfect 60° in your glass. White wines are best served at 47 degrees. Warm whites taste dull.

Not every white whine needs to be chilled before serving. White wines have different textures, and can be served at various temperatures. Some wines such as sauvignon blanc should be served cold but a chardonnay or a pinot will taste better at room temperature.

If you are trying to find a way to drink a less-expensive wine, consider making it into a punch or Sangria. Adding some fruit, a bit of sweet soda and a little ice can completely change the taste. This makes for a nice addition to a baby shower or birthday party, and one of your guests is sure to enjoy.

Left over wine is wonderful for cooking. When you're down to the bottom of the bottle, do not throw it out. Instead, reseal the bottle and save it for your next meal. You can use the wine to make a sauce for pasta, flavor meat or add to your special stew recipe.

Many red wines are matured in oak barrels for far longer than white wine would be. This adds tannins from the wood into the wine, creating a complex flavor. This would be too much for the subtle flavor of a white wine, so they are rarely aged in this manner.

Don't fill your house with only the wines you enjoy at the moment. Stocking up isn't a great idea if your tastes change frequently. You may love a label now, but might hate it tomorrow. You might end up wasting money and space on a lot of bottles you will not drink.
